What is Neurofeedback for Teens & Young Adults?

Neurofeedback is a safe, comfortable, non-invasive therapeutic approach. It is not talk therapy but brain training.

Talk therapy is more of a bottom-up approach. Through talking over several sessions, the therapist is able to formulate a clinical impression of what is driving the challenges. They then can really start to target the challenge and help the teen or young adult overcome that challenge.

Neurofeedback records the brain's electrical activity which is how the brain communicates. From this recording, a brain map is created.

From the brain map, the neurofeedback therapist is able to see what parts of the brain are overperforming or underperforming. And once we identify these areas, we can immediately start to train those areas to perform at peak, optimal levels.

Neurofeedback then is more of a top-down therapeutic approach. We get to see from the start where in the brain the depression, anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, ADHD, trauma, PTSD, autism spectrum, and other challenges stem from.

How Does Neurofeedback Train the Brain?

When the brain is over or underperforming, this can and often does create emotional and/or behavioral challenges. The idea then is to train the brain to perform optimally.

Using sophisticated, state of the art software, the neurofeedback therapist creates a training protocol that helps train the brain to perform at optimal levels. The vehicle that is used for neurofeedback training are T.V. shows, movies, and a neurofeedback specific video game.

The neurofeedback therapist places a cap with 19 sensors or individual sensors on the client's head. The cap resembles a swimmer's cap and is embedded with sensors.

These sensors record and show the brain's electrical activity, or how the brain is performing. The neurofeedback therapists starts a T.V. show, a movie, or a video game and places a digital dimmer on the screen.

When the brain is performing like we want it to based on the training protocol selected, the client gets to hear and see what is playing on the T.V.

When the brain is not performing like we want it to based on the training protocol selected, the screen fades to black and the sound decreases in volume.

Our Amazing, Ever Learning Brain

Our brains are truly a wonder. The brain is always surveying our environment, picking up on sensory ques, and assessing what is needed for our safety and other benefits.

The brain is a sensory and pattern seeking organ. It has evolved to seek out patterns in the world. The brain learns whether they can influence these patterns and if so, will begin to do so.

So, during neurofeedback training, as the brain performs like we want it to, the brain gets rewarded by being able to see and hear what is on the screen.

When the brain is not performing like we want it to, the screen fades away as does the sound.

This back and forth creates a pattern that the brain latches on to and start to learn that when it performs a certain way, the client gets to see and hear what is on the screen. As the brain repeatedly does this, it starts to change the way the brain performs.

Over the course of neurofeedback therapy sessions, the brain changes and these changes are long term changes.

Neurofeedback for Young Adult & Teen Anxiety in Sugar Land, TX

We have various regions in our brain that work together to help us to feel happy, do well on tests and exams, socially interact in healthy ways, cope with challenging life experiences, etc.

There are also regions in our brain that work together and can make complicated and difficult. One of these regions of the brain is the fear or anxiety network.

The fear network includes but is not limited to the:

  • Amygdala,

  • Thalamus,

  • Dorsomedial Prefrontal Cortex,

  • Hypothalamus,

  • Basal Ganglia,

  • Cingulate Gyrus,

  • Hippocampus, and

  • Insular Cortex.

The role that this network plays when functioning at optimal levels is to warn of us danger. Our brain is constantly scanning our environment for sensory input. When colleting this input, it helps us know if we are in danger.

With teen anxiety and young adult anxiety, this network is on overdrive. It encodes and sends messages to throughout our brain and body that things that are not normally threatening, are threatening. This can be a real-life experience or imagining future events in our mind.

Our logical mind knows and understands that we shouldn't be fearful or anxious over a given situation. We see others participating without the fear or anxiety. Yet the brain makes it feel real and anxiety is the result.

Neurofeedback helps train these regions of the brain to either down train if overperforming or uptrain if underperforming. The end result can be the brain functioning at optimal levels which helps reduce or eliminate the symptoms of anxiety.
